 King Cobra

The king cobra is the world's longest venomous snake, with a length up to 18.5 to 18.8 ft. This species, which preys chiefly on other snakes, is found predominantly in forests from India through Southeast Asia. The king cobra is considered to be a very dangerous snake for various reasons and has a fearsome reputation in its range, although, like other snakes, it typically avoids confrontation with humans if possible. It is also considered culturally significant and has many superstitions around it.

Sustained loss of habitat has now placed the world's longest venomous snake, the king cobra, on the 'endangered' list. The snake is found mostly in the Indian rainforests in the Western Ghats.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature's latest "Red List of Threatened Species" features king cobra. Besides loss of habitat, over-use for medicinal purposes has been cited as one of the reasons.
